Tax Return Due Dates Beginning 2009

The Internal Revenue Service has changed the extended due dates for certain tax form types.  If you are a partnership, LLC, LLP, Family Limited Partnership, or any other kind of pass-through organization that files a Form 1065, you must file your tax return by April 15 of each year.  The change is with the extended due date which had previously been a filing by October 15, but beginning with tax years ending in 2008, the final extended due date for Form 1065 is now September 15.

The same is true for Form 1041 for both estates and trusts.  They now have a final extended due date of September 15.

We agree with the IRS change for a couple of reasons.  We like it because it spaces the preparation cycle out a bit but more importantly it eliminates the October 15 "crunch" of individual filers waiting for their Form K-1.

With the exception of benefit plan and gift tax returns, the ONLY tax returns that can now be filed as late as October 15 are an individuals Form 1040.
